Rest In Peace, (Great) Grandpa Sam

On Thursday, March 6th, my maternal grandfather, Saverio "Sam," passed away after a long illness. He was a wonderful man and loved his family so very much -- my Grandma Madeline of 64 years, 4 children (and 4 children-in-law), 10 grandchildren (and 4 grandchildren-in-law and one soon-to-be) and 7 great-grandchildren. He was loved abundantly and is deeply missed.

In his obituary, it included that my Grandpa was always proud that all 10 of his grandchildren graduated from college. You see, my Grandpa's father was an Italian immigrant and his mother was the daughter of Italian immigrants. My Grandpa had to drop out of school in 9th grade to support himself and his family. He worked several years on the Railroad and Steel Mill as he and my Grandma raised 4 children. A remarkable story, really, and like so many others from their generation. But, my cousins and I went beyond just graduating with our bachelor's degrees -- 5 of us have our master's degrees, and we all, thankfully, have found success in our respective careers as educators, business professionals, football coach and small business owner. I can't imagine the pride our grandparents must feel after all the sacrifices they made for their children and future generations. Their stories really inspire me and influence me more than I probably realize.

A decorated WWII veteran, my Grandpa chose to have the Area Honor Guard give military rites before his funeral Mass. My Grandpa never talked much about his time in the Army, but it was a beautiful ceremony to learn all that he did and earned while serving overseas.

My Grandfather's Earthly life did not include high-earning salaries and professional accolades, but he was "rich" in so many other ways. He served his family, his country and God. And that, in my book, makes him one of the wealthiest men I may ever know.

Here are a few pictures within the last 10 years:

My wedding day -- June 26, 2004. They were married on June 25, 1949. Another note worth mentioning, I am named after my Grandpa Sam.
My Grandparents with their children and children-in-law at their 60th wedding anniversary celebration.
With all 10 of their Grandchildren and 3 Grandchildren-in-law and 3 Great-Grandchildren (4 more came in the next 4 years).
Grandpa, we know you are dancing in heaven! May you Rest In Peace.
